I know I promised this post a while back, but I wanted to make sure that these self-watering systems really held up to the hype. The answer to my watering problems: sub-irrigation. Even though I adore this simple front yard decor, I forget to water, which makes them not-so-lovely. So, what began this experiment? Let me explain: as part of our front yard un-landscaping project I’ve done my research on how to keep my window boxes lovely and lush all summer long. Place your plant into the bottle with the leaves coming out through the neck. Turn the bottle over and fill it with soil.Self-watering might sound a little bit robotic, so maybe I should title this post DIY Sub-irrigation Pots and Planters, but that doesn’t sound nearly as fun! But, let’s be clear, this home made system can be really really helpful when it comes to watering, but you’ll still need to water your plants once in a while. Gently push the tomato plant through the hole and wrap the filtre around the base. Take the coffee filter and make a hole in the centre. Pick out your tomato plant, choose one that isn’t too large to make the next step easier. This section will hold water to keep the plant hydrated. Make 10 holes in the bottom part of the water bottle. Keep in mind that you will use these holes to hang the bottle, so make sure they are in the same position. It should not be too loose or too tight, but should fit comfortably. Make two holes in the sides of the bottle (with the bottom placed inside). Place the bottom part inside the rest of the bottle, as shown in the image below. Wash a 2-liter plastic bottle and cut off the bottom section of the bottle. But if you don’t have a yard or garden, you know that finding space for plants can be a real problem. We all love the taste of a homegrown tomato, they’re always more flavourful and fresher than anything found in a supermarket.
